ALEXANDRIA, VA, and NEW YORK, NY, November 3, 2004—Alexander Street Press has acquired Classical Music Library, executives from both companies announced today. The acquisition of the library music reference service will allow Alexander Street to add audio capabilities to their text- and image-based humanities collections. Alexander Street will continue to grow the existing Classical Music Library service, adding it to their growing catalog of award-winning indexes and full-text collections, and will also use the newly-acquired music platform to create new collections—both new music services and new collections that combine music, text, and images.

“Alexander Street and Classical have shared the same commitment to top-quality, discipline-specific Web products that are highly structured and indexed,” said Stephen Rhind-Tutt, president of Alexander Street. “Classical’s technical expertise in streaming music, their relationships with more than 30 different record labels, and their understanding of music-related indexing will complement Alexander Street’s expertise in text and image publishing. Libraries will be the big winners, as we launch new and expanded projects that bring together all of these elements.”

“We couldn’t be more pleased,” said Tim Lloyd of Classical. “Alexander Street’s products and approach make them the ideal company to allow us to continue growing Classical Music Library, and our combined talent and collaborative energy will bring the most exciting new products to librarians.”

Lloyd, who has been CEO of Classical International, will move to Alexander Street’s offices in Alexandria, Va. Roger Press, who has been in charge of developing content for Classical Music Library, will continue in that role.

Classical Music Library is an ever-growing, fully searchable classical music resource for libraries. It contains tens of thousands of licensed recording tracks that users listen to on the Internet. The audio selections are cross-referenced to a database of supplementary reference information. Users browse, search, click, and then listen to the music through their headphones.
